RK&K’s work improving Church Road in Henrico County, Virginia was honored by the Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance.
The project was named the 2022 “Less than $10M – Other” Winner during the VTCA Transportation Engineering Awards, which recognizes outstanding design work in the transportation industry.
RK&K’s project team collaborated with the county on a public engagement program to determine a community-supported solution for safely repurposing the four-lane roadway with a mixture of land uses along the corridor. The planning, design, and construction for this $1.5 million project were completed on a condensed schedule and earned several accolades from residents, stakeholders, and political leaders.
The successful improvements addressed the concerns raised by the nearby residents. The project provided safer pedestrian crossings and introduced bicycle infrastructure to connect to other parts of the surrounding area. It also reduced vehicular travel speeds, all while maintaining the appearance of the existing corridor. RK&K’s public outreach effort and collaboration with the community during project development led to tremendous buy-in from residents and increased usage by both pedestrians and bicyclists.
“We are honored by this award and are so proud that our work making the road a safe place to bicycle and walk from neighborhood to neighborhood, the elementary school, and nearby shops has been recognized by VTCA,” said Director of Transportation Owen Peery, PE.
