People living in the Stratford Hills neighborhood in southern Richmond, Virginia have some long-awaited relief from severe erosion washing away their backyards.

RK&K’s Water Resources team designed solutions in partnership with Richmond DPU to address severe erosion within the existing channel and the consistent sediment buildup between Wakefield Road and Rattlesnake Creek.
The Wakefield Road Drainage Improvement Project included almost 1,000 linear feet of new storm drain pipe within the eroded swale between Stratford Road and Wakefield Road. It also involved the replacement of undersized culverts under each road. Our team also performed a hydrologic & hydraulic analysis (H&HA) to verify that no floodplain impacts were associated with the proposed outfall improvements.
“It is very rewarding to be involved with this type of project that resolves a safety issue within a residential neighborhood where you can see such a major difference,” said Project Delivery Leader Mike Hogan, PE. “Working together with City of Richmond DPU staff to complete this project from initiation to final construction was a true team effort.”
The team is also currently working with the client in advertisement phase to secure a contractor for the nearby Whitehead Road Culvert Replacement and Sidewalk Improvement Project. That project is scheduled to begin in late summer/fall of 2023 following the utility relocation phase, which is currently underway.
