The Top 50 engineering firms are ranked by North American trenchless revenue in 2021 or the company’s last fiscal year. “Trenchless revenue” is defined as the net revenue generated by a firm from trenchless services provided, including revenue generated from studies, design, construction oversight, and inspection services using trenchless methods for new installations, repairs, or rehabilitation.
“RK&K continues to utilize and incorporate trenchless technologies whenever possible in an array of infrastructure and utility projects to accommodate clients’ needs while minimizing disturbance and environmental impacts and extended construction time,” said Senior Project Delivery Leader Keith Eysaman, PACP, MACP, ITCP-MH, ITCP-CIPP.
Trenchless and semi-trenchless technology can include construction methods for installing new underground pipes or utilities where surface disturbance via traditional trench-type installations is not feasible or too disruptive, such as under roadways, in environmentally sensitive areas, or under bodies of water. Trenchless installations can be used anywhere open-cut type installations would be too costly, impede surface activities or cause excessive environmental impacts or public disturbance.

“The use of trenchless and semi-trenchless technologies has been finding their way into almost every utility-related project to help address aging infrastructure needs of sanitary sewers, service house connections, service lateral piping, force mains and pressure sewers, as well as storm drains, culverts, and other utilities utilizing a variety of rehabilitation and replacement technologies,” Eysaman added.
RK&K has also been utilizing various trenchless and semi-trenchless technologies to address water main replacements and rehabilitation projects, using Class I (non-structural) to Class IV (fully structural) liners. These include methodologies such as cleaning and cement-mortar lining, Spray-in-Place Pipe (SIPP) lining, pipe bursting, jack and bore, sliplining, horizontal directional drilling (HDD), internal joint seal repairs, Carbon-Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) repairs, as well as the use of pressure-rated Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) lining.
An example of how trenchless technologies are being used to address emergency situations is demonstrated when RK&K assisted the City of Baltimore with design and specialized construction and inspection phase services required to complete emergency repairs of a failing 100+-year-old storm drain located in downtown Baltimore. Repairs to a 120-inch diameter storm drain located approximately 20 feet below ground were completed utilizing a cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) liner system installed from a small access shaft.
“The use of this technology allowed an in situ (in-place) structural repair to be completed in a short timeframe before failure occurred without costly excavation and long-term disturbance associated with replacement,” Eysaman said. “The 120-inch diameter CIPP liner installed in this storm drain remains one of the largest CIPP liner installations installed in the U.S. to date.”
