Rodanthe Seagrass Relocation Project Wins ACEC/NC Grand Award

The Rodanthe Seagrass Relocation project was honored with this year’s Engineering Excellence Grand Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina (ACEC/NC).

American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina (ACEC/NC) honored RK&K with this year’s Engineering Excellence Grand Award for our effort on the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s (NCDOT) Rodanthe Seagrass Relocation project.

In 2017, NCDOT came to our team of biologists with unique challenges: to map this seagrass, commonly called submerged aquatic vegetation, and to track any changes in the seagrass community throughout the course of the Rodanthe Bridge project from preconstruction through post-construction. With pictures taken by drone, a GIS-based image classification methodology was successfully deployed to extract seagrass polygons and locations.

Each year ACEC/NC selects the top engineering projects in North Carolina. These prestigious awards honor the year’s most outstanding engineering accomplishments and recognize engineering firms for projects that demonstrate the highest degree of achievement, value and ingenuity. Projects that are Grand Award winners are eligible for ACEC’s national competition.
