RK&K recognizes Rail Safety Week from September 19th-25th and is helping to #STOPTrackTragedies by highlighting the importance of safety education and by empowering the public to be careful around tracks and trains.
Supporting the rail and transit industry’s mission of safety means developing and maintaining safe grade crossings at several of their project sites.
“Grade crossings are where a train, such as light rail, commuter rail, or freight rail, crosses a roadway at-grade,” said Project Delivery Leader Steve Kolarz, PE. “Safety of the traveling public is our paramount goal as we evaluate and recommend modifications or elimination of grade crossings. The design of grade crossings is often a multi-disciplinary project, involving track, traffic, roadway, and drainage.”

RK&K has recently completed inspection of all 221 grade crossings on the Maryland Transit Administration’s Light RailLink network and developed a prioritized list of maintenance and upgrades and are currently designing renewals for nine grade crossing locations along the network.

In North Carolina, several grade crossing projects are also underway, including a feasibility study for the Wolfpack Lane Grade Separation and the final design for the Hilltop Road Grade Separation for the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
