The Project
RK&K is the lead designer on a design-build team for this coastal viaduct over the Pamlico Sound in NC’s Outer Banks.
The new 2.5 mile long, 40-ft wide, two-lane bridge will provide 17 feet of clearance above sea level. The bridge will redirect traffic away from a narrow sandy barrier island susceptible to erosion and breaches and is designed for severe scour, vessel collision and storm surge forces. RK&K worked closely with the D/B contractor to develop an innovative progressive trestle system to efficiently build the bridge.
The use of prefabricated cylinder piles, pier caps and bulb-T girders, in conjunction with the trestle, allowed for economical, accelerated construction. The bridge is well into construction as of summer of 2019.
