Under the direction of Montgomery County DOT, RK&K led a consultant team including Toole Design, RJM Engineering, and Capitol Development Design Inc. to develop final engineering and construction phase services for new bicycle and pedestrian improvements for the CCST through downtown Bethesda between Woodmont Avenue and Wisconsin Avenue.
The new facilities included separated bike lanes, widened sidewalks, intersection modifications, drainage, stormwater management, traffic signalization, signing, pavement markings, and crosswalk improvements.
RK&K’s traffic engineers prepared signals, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), and lighting plans that included the first implementation of a bike signal along a Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) roadway in Maryland.
“We are thrilled that this project has been recognized by the bicycle advocacy community as one to emulate,” said Project Manager Will Wu, PE, PTOE. “RK&K, along with our design team partners, were happy to support Montgomery County implement this important segment of the Downtown Bethesda bike network. This is just one of many capital improvement projects RK&K is leading to support Montgomery County in achieving its goals of a safe, sustainable, and multimodal transportation future.”

As part of a larger network, the project links downtown Bethesda to the nearby Capital Crescent Trail, an 11-mile paved and gravel trail that connects Bethesda with the Georgetown neighborhood in D.C. and Silver Spring, Maryland.
