This week, our team celebrated the completion of the $71.2 million Northeast Corridor capacity improvement project between Wilmington and Newark, DE for Amtrak and the Delaware Transit Corporation.
RK&K was responsible for preliminary engineering, environmental analysis, public involvement coordination, final design, and construction-related services. Our design for this project included alignments and profiles for 1.5 miles of track, new crossovers, track realignment, and replacing the bridge over Little Mill Creek, including detailed hydrological and scour analysis. We also provided preliminary and final engineering design services and coordination for relocating the Newark, DE SEPTA station. Our relocation plan allowed for developing a double-track station with expanded parking, and it eliminated conflicts with Norfolk Southern’s freight operations and accommodation of future service from Dover and Middletown, DE.
We also managed the project’s public involvement efforts including public workshops, stakeholder interviews, and a working group of key stakeholders. Through this work, we were successful in gaining community consensus and support.
