The Project
Located in the Delaware Bayshore Byway, this new observation tower replaces and old tower with an ADA accessible platform and additional wildlife observation space for bird watchers who come to this area from all over the world. It also provides a wonderful location for watching planes take off from Dover Air Force Base.
The vision for this site was to create a premier destination for wildlife viewing, including a marque viewing tower, creating a wildlife viewing experience unlike any in the state. RK&K led a Stakeholder Group, including DNREC, DelDOT, the American Birding Association, local wildlife enthusiasts and photographers, to provide input on the project. RK&K developed 3D rendered images of the viewing structure, taking into consideration stakeholder input and client budget.
The project includes a new trailhead; reconfiguration and expansion of an existing parking area to improve circulation efficiency; 400’ of boardwalk and a multi-level viewing tower. In collaboration with the not-for-profit group Yes U Can USA, RK&K developed a railing system that complied with building and ADA codes.
